You can play this game start to finish without telling us anything. There are no accounts. We only ever get something from you at the moment you send in a video.
A first name, an optional email, your video, and a one-way hash of your network address. Videos of claims that did not hold up go after 14 days, private ones after 30, and a video that took a day is kept for twelve months whether it was ever shown or not. You can delete your video yourself, immediately, from your receipt link. Nothing is used for advertising or to train a model, and we sell nothing.
Nothing is collected. There is no analytics script, no advertising tag, no third-party cookie and no tracking pixel on this site. We do not set a cookie at all.
Your browser stores a few things on your own device which we never see: your chosen region, your receipt links, and your location if you asked “how far from me?”. It also holds your player token, which is the one thing that travels, and only when you send a find or a call. It is in the table below. Clearing your browser storage erases the lot.
Cloudflare serves the site and keeps standard request logs for a short period in order to run the network and stop attacks. That is Cloudflare acting for us as our infrastructure provider.
Your browser asks your permission and hands the coordinates to the page. The distance is worked out on your device. That position is not sent to us and never leaves your phone.
| What | Why | Must you? |
|---|---|---|
| Name for the board | So there is something to put on the spot. A first name or a nickname is plenty. | Yes |
| So we can reach you about your own claim, and nothing else. Never shown on the site, and it is not added to any list. | No | |
| Your address on the noon list | A separate thing you have to ask for: the pin, once a day at most, and nothing else in it. Never shared, never sold, unsubscribe link in every one. | No, and it is off unless you tick it |
| A player token | A random number your browser makes the first time you use the site. It goes with a find or a call so that your tally and your calls add up over time instead of vanishing. No name and no email are attached to it unless you give us one. | Automatic, and you can wipe it |
| Your video | It is the whole claim. We watch it to check it, and show it only if you said we may. | Yes |
| Where you are, at the moment you send | Only to order the review queue when several claims land together. It never decides who wins, because it can be faked. | No, it is a tick box |
| A hash of your network address | Rate limiting, so one machine cannot flood the game. Salted and one-way: we store the hash, never the address. | Automatic |
| The server time your file landed | It is the race. | Automatic |
Until a day settles, the public board rounds arrival times to the hour, so that nothing on the page tells a stranger where you were at 2:14 this afternoon. The exact minute appears once the day is done, and it is on your own receipt the whole time.
| Thing | Gone after |
|---|---|
| Video of a claim that did not hold up | 14 days, which is how long you have to appeal it |
| Video that took a day | 12 months, shown or not: it is the evidence for a result other people raced against |
| Video you did not let us show, that did not take a day | 30 days |
| A clip you let us cut into the game's own videos | Kept while it is in the archive, up to two years. Its own tick box, and you can withdraw it |
| Any other video | 12 months |
| Video with somebody under 16 in it | 7 days, and never published |
| Your email and the address hash | Deleted with the video |
| Your address on the noon list | Until you unsubscribe, and then it goes |
| Name, time and result of a claim | Kept, because it is the record of the game and other people raced against it. Your name comes off it on request, the same day |
| Your player token | Until you delete it, from your receipt or by clearing this site's storage. On our side, a token that never made a call or a claim is dropped after 60 days unseen; your browser simply makes itself a new one if you come back |
| Rate-limit counters | Hours |
| A call on tomorrow's pin | 60 days |
This is enforced by a job that runs every day and actually deletes the files, not by somebody remembering to.
Your receipt link has a delete button. It removes the file from storage there and then. You do not need to email anybody, give a reason, or wait. If you have lost the link, write to jhustler@me.com and we will find the claim from your name and the day.
Right now one person reviews videos: James, who runs this. No moderation contractors, no volunteers, no partners. If that ever changes, the people who review will be named on this page before they see anything.
We use a short list of services to run the game, and nothing else. Cloudflare does the hosting, the database and the video storage. Open-Meteo and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute give us the forecast at a pin. Public map data comes from Land Information New Zealand, the Outdoor Access Commission, the Department of Conservation and the elevation service that serves New Zealand's national 8 metre model, and we only ever read from them. Everything on that list except Cloudflare gets exactly one thing from us, every time: a coordinate on a map. We have to send it to draw a pin and to check it. None of them are ever told anything about you.
We will not hand over anything unless the law requires it, and we will say so publicly if that ever happens, to the extent we are allowed to.
On Cloudflare's network, which means your video and the claim record may be stored and processed outside New Zealand. Cloudflare is bound by contract to protect it and to use it only to provide the service. By sending in a video you accept that it may be held overseas on that basis.
The game is for people 16 and over. Under 16s are welcome outdoors, obviously, and should go with somebody over 16 who sends the video in. A video with an under-16 in it is never published and is deleted within 7 days.
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete your video at any time. Write to jhustler@me.com. We will answer within 20 working days, which is what the Privacy Act allows, and usually the same week.
If we get it wrong you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner: privacy.org.nz. We would rather you told us first, but you do not have to.
If a breach happens that could seriously harm anyone, we will tell the people affected and the Privacy Commissioner, as the Act requires, and we will say what happened rather than issuing a statement about how much we value your privacy.
Email jhustler@me.com. Tell us the page and what the problem is. If it is a video with you in it, or your property, or somewhere that should not be published, we will take it down while we look, not after. Nothing has to be a formal legal notice.
